| The Social Justice Committee presents forums,
open to all, that seek solutions to problems besetting our communities. Issues have included gun safety, support for the rights of minorities, opposition to capital punishment, protecting our drinking water, and promoting affordable housing.
The committee enabled local participation in the Million Mom March in Washington. It has also supported legislative actions in Albany and Suffolk County, most recently on behalf of Latino workers.
The congregation as a whole contributes to the community in several other ways. Project Ornament generates holiday gifts that are distributed by the Family Service League. The Helping Hand Fund provides emergency relief to individuals who are not part of the congregation as well as to institutions in the community.

Bill of Rights Defense Resolution
We, the Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork, assert there is no conflict between maintaining our freedoms and fighting terrorism. We, therefore, urge the Southampton Town Board and the Suffolk County Legislature to affirmatively defend civil liberties by assuring that local police and other agencies do not aid federal officials in any way that would require violating our laws or the Constitution. Specifically, we ask our legislators and Board Members to ensure that police and other agencies refrain from engaging in racial profiling, secret detentions, monitoring political or religious meetings, warrantless searches, electronic surveillance, spying on neighbors and amassing databases of personal information. We ask that police and other agences report to the county when federal officials make such requests.
